What is Social Media exacly?There has been plenty of discussion regarding social media as it is a relatively new term in business vocabulary and is currently moving from ‘buzz word’ to a strategic tool. In its simplest form, social media has been defined as ‘anything that the internet uses to facilitate conversations.’ Theorists, Solis and Brakening (2009) argue that firms must realise that adapting the ‘powerful’ tool of social media is essential. To highlight this, they compared the changing and evolutionary media ‘game’ to a Darwinian ‘survival of the fittest’ scenario amongst today’s corporations stating that firms must ‘ENGAGE OR DIE’, meaning that firms must change the way they behave and adapt to these technological trends.
